Private Sessions vs. Group Classes

February 12, 2024

One of the many things that are special about Classical Pilates is that it’s system is designed for any body type. There is no too out of shape, too short, too thick, too thin, too old, etc. Pilates Sestina focuses on being an inclusive Pilates center in Traverse City, Michigan where all walks of life are invited to benefit from our instruction. We have contemporary and classical instructors to accommodate the needs of each client.

We want to set our clients up for success. This revolves around learning Pilates safely. It is important to understand how to modify exercises to each body to allow a safe, effective learning environment. For this, we recommend private sessions with a comprehensively certified instructor to start with.

If you are new to Pilates it can be intimidating, humbling, and even embarrassing as you begin to discover your body’s potential for movement. Starting with private sessions will minimize this feeling and you will quickly gain the confidence to join any class that suits your needs. During private sessions at Pilates Sestina, you will have your instructors undivided attention and support. Each session is tailored to your body’s needs and we help you reach your goals through Contrology, the method created by Joseph Pilates. Utilizing one on one support will help you move through the Pilates system efficiently, seeing results sooner.

Self confidence comes with doing things better yourself. In your private sessions (we recommend four before jumping into group classes), we will help you gain the self confidence to succeed at your movement goals. Our Traverse City location is designed to provide a safe place to learn and practice Pilates at any level.

Often times we work on specific goals such as improved Balance, Coordination, or Posture. Other private sessions are designed to challenge the core through thoughtfully selected Pilates exercises.

Whatever the goals are, safety is where we start. And we love to educate our clients how to duplicate the work in their daily life. the attention to detail in each session is how we provide the remarkable results are clients rave about and return for.

There is no too old, too thick, too thin, too stiff, too tired for Pilates Sestina

Do you have to stay with Private Sessions?

Because of the numerous benefits of private session, we encourage a blend of private and semi-private sessions. The one-on-one attention and relationship you build with your instructor is priceless as you advance through Pilates. In our Northern Michigan boutique studio, the small group classes are designed to provide you with a workout that will challenge your existing practice. The building blocks of your practice are placed when you are one on one with your instructor.

The benefits of your private sessions will shine through improved technique, improved proprioception (body awareness), concentration, and faster progression and results. This will boost your self confidence and before you know it, you will be searching for any Pilates you can get your hands on!

How to begin:

Find a studio that you can commit to. Some limiting factors will be location, price, and hours of operation. Pilates Sestina offers private sessions 6 days a week. Our instructors are dedicated professionals that are continually learning from each other, world renown Pilates professionals, and we have all been comprehensively certified. Comprehensive certification should be on the top of your list when researching instructors. More on that in another blog.

I recommend reaching out to the potential studio and schedule a meet and greet with the owner or instructor.

Then, try it out. I recommend a minimum of 4 sessions (unless you become injured or have a strong instinct otherwise) before deciding if Pilates is for you. While you are navigating a trial period, be sure to communicate your likes and dislikes. A knowledgeable instructor will be able to work with your body but they can’t read your mind. Open communication will benefit you both and allow you to feel more comfortable as you progress your practice.
